The article makes an attempt to consider the concept of “civilization” and its corollary “barbarism” from different perspectives. It shows how term successively acquires ideological, scientific philosophical dimensions. emer­gence in course history such social institutions as religion, trade, politics, law, and, finally, centralized military industry a developed economy mark stages gradual filling civility with content that we find it today. Barbarism anthropological-geographical characteristic turns into designation functional features processes – measure their deviation “civilized” mode action. authors are inclined believe that, despite historical diversity civilization strategies, movement is rather universal means search­ing for balanced approach use resources both by individual human communi­ties humankind whole. A generalized idea energy efficiency can serve rough success civilizational processes.
